About Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport, known as MIA in airline code lingo, is the largest U.S. gateway to Latin America, which is to be expected since it is so close to Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

Founded in 1928, the airport hauls more freight internationally than any other airport in the United States. Just as important, it is the second most popular airport in the country for international passengers. It ranks 27th in the world for handling international passengers. In 2011, the airport served 38.3 million domestic and international passengers on almost 390,000 commercial airline arrivals and departures.

MIA is served by 80 airlines, which fly non-stop to 45 U.S. and 85 international destinations. Operated by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, airport terminal space will be seven million square feet when an expansion project is finished.

The airport is located on 3,200 acres near downtown Miami. It offers currency exchange as well as traditional shops and eateries for passengers waiting for flights out. Pet owners on connecting flights are sure to welcome the "doggy parks" for their animals to relieve themselves and get a bit of exercise. Pet facilities are located in terminals D, E and J.
